Trekking solo in Sapa: a first-timer's safety checklist for women

Sapa is one of Southeast Asia's most welcoming first treks — terraced valleys, homestays run by Hmong and Dao women, and busy trails. Here is our solo checklist:

1/5

1/ Book a licensed local guide or a women-run homestay trek — the income stays with local women and you gain a safety net.

2/5

2/ Share your route and check-in times with one person at home. Offline maps downloaded before you leave town.

3/5

3/ Weather turns fast above 1,500m. Rain layer and warm layer always, even in July.

4/5

4/ Cash in small notes. Card machines are rare in the villages, and homestays are cash-only.

5/5

5/ Trust the turn-back rule: fog, injury or a bad feeling are all valid reasons. The mountain will still be there.

The women-run homestay tip is gold. My Sapa trek with a Dao guide was the safest I've felt travelling alone.

Doing this for my 40th birthday. Saving this checklist and the turn-back rule.

Raising my son alone: the systems that saved my sanity

When I became a single mom three years ago, everyone offered sympathy. What I actually needed was structure. Three things that changed our home: 1. A Sunday reset — thirty minutes where we plan the week together, even though he's only seven. 2. A 'village list' on the fridge — three people I can call, and he's learning who they are too. 3. One hour a week that is mine alone, non-negotiable. I'm not a parenting expert. Just a mom who stopped trying to do everything alone.
